The title of the piece is based on a quote is from Alan Garner’s The Owl Service. It’s a modern retelling of the Welsh myth of Blodeuwedd, the woman created from flowers and later cursed to become an owl.
Bloedeuwedd was my starting point for this painting but I soon found myself following a trail of owls across myth and history and ended up drawing inspiration from the Burney Relief in the British Museum. This tiny terracotta plaque depicts a winged goddess with bird’s talons, flanked by owls, seemed to sum up everything I’d discovered as I researched owl mythology.
