Fortress of Montsegur 7th June 2009

This painting took a long time coming, and still does no justice to the lady in question.

It's based on something I saw which has changed the way I've looked at things ever since.

It's as close as I can get to what I saw, but as I was pretty much on my face in the dirt at the time I had to fill in a few gaps.

The fortress had disappeared a little while earlier but she was coming in from the direction of the tower directly opposite the full moon.

It was a cloudy night so I checked later on an astronomy program and the Milky Way would have been right behind her at the time.

It started as a pencil sketch and was finished in a mixture of ArtRage, Photoshop, and Coral Photopaint.

I originally called it This is a Terrible place... a quote taken from Genesis via the inscription above the church door in Rennes-le-Chateau.
